The Bund and Lujiazui: the back story

About The Bund and Lujiazui: the back story

Shanghai’s classic view is a meeting of two skylines. On the west bank, the Bund’s stone banks and hotels line the river; on the east bank, Lujiazui’s towers rise to Shanghai Tower, at 632 metres the tallest building in China.

The Bund

The waterfront runs along Zhongshan Dong Yi Road. Its landmarks include the Customs House, with its clock tower, the former HSBC building beside it, and the hotels at either end: the Fairmont Peace at Nanjing Road and The Peninsula near Suzhou Creek.

Lujiazui

Across the river stand the Oriental Pearl TV Tower, Jin Mao Tower, the Shanghai World Financial Center and Shanghai Tower, with the Top of Shanghai Observatory on its 118th floor.

The Top of Shanghai Observatory’s lift reaches 546 metres, on the tower’s 118th floor.

Crossing the river

Metro Line 2 runs under the river between East Nanjing Road and Lujiazui, and ferries cross the Huangpu too.

Our advice: walk the Bund early in the morning, cross to Lujiazui for lunch, and come back for the lights at night.
